I’ll be honest, before I read this book I had no idea it existed. I mean that’s sort of what happens when you go to a books store and look at books and find one you’ve never heard of and buy it to read. But what I mean to say is that I was originally looking to receive an ARC for a book called The Alpha Protector’s Fated Mate. Turns out that was the second book. I might need to look into books more before I say I’ll read them… I probably won’t, but the thought counts I’m sure.
When I got the email for the ARC I realized that I needed to read the first book in the series! The first book being The Alpha Protector’s Secret by Sloan Samuels.
I highly enjoyed this book. I didn’t realize it was a shorter book when I started it until I devoured the whole think in a day (I was busy but I read it when I had times where I was just sitting there).
I have read werewolf stories before, but I’ll be honest, it had been a while. This was a great way to get back into this genre. It had the fantasy elements of werewolves and pack mentality, while also taking place in the modern time.
SPOILERS AHEAD
Elena is a member of a wolf pack called the Moon River wolves. Raised to act as a demure housewife, she had bigger dreams than that, and one day, she ran away from her pack. She had believed that her pack would not care for her disappearance, and would have left her to herself, as they had always seen her as weak. But, lo and behold, her pack did not appreciate her running off, as she had been promised to the alpha of a stronger pack.
While Elena had moved to New York to follow her dream of being a ballerina, her father, the alpha of the Moon River pack, had visited Luke, the new Alpha of the pack they had made the deal with. (To be honest I don’t remember the name of Luke’s pack… the Bloody something I think.) during the meeting the Moon River alpha said that for her transgressions, Elena would be tried and killed for breaking the treaty. Luke, seeing a picture of Elena and realizing she was in fact his mate, couldn’t let that happen.
Luke traveled from rural Arkansas to Nee York to find his mate and protect her from her old pack. Finding her at her ballet studio, Luke becomes a security guard there in order to get closer to her and protect her. Instantly Elena feels a connection to Luke. In no time at all, she and Luke begin to see each other, Elena, keeping her werewolf self a secret? While Luke keeping the fact that he too is a werewolf and her mate a secret.
SPOILERS END
This was a fantastic quick read. The chemistry came in fast, but it felt right, not forced and superficial. While they do start dating right away, they get to know each other as individuals also. I enjoyed the dynamic between Elena and Luke, but Luke’s interactions with his own pack mates was also enjoyable.
This book does have some spice, but it’s more in the mild side, nothing too crazy.
This book does end on a cliffhanger, so readers beware, as the second book hasn’t officially been released until October 23rd.
Overall, I’d give this books a 4.5 out of 5, and a 2 out of 5 on the spicy meter.
