The Wren in the Holly Library

Writer: SylphSylph

So, this isn’t a post about free books on Amazon, but I had to get this off my chest. I just came off a drought from easing Fourth Wing and Iron Flame, and was looking for something to fill the void. Enter The Wren in the Holly Library.

I admit, I was first taken in by the pretty cover and the sprayed edges (a gorgeous blue with a holly motive all over) but I am so glad I picked it up. I absolutely adored this book.

SPOILERS AHEAD, YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!

Kierce is a girl who has made a living for herself by stealing from others. In a world where monsters have come out of the shadows, she has had to do what she does best to get by. She lived with her two friends, Ethan and Gen, in Gen’s mother’s brothel. Her current job was to get into a house, find the library, grab a diamond ring, and bring it back to the wraith who hired her.

She didn’t know that the person she had been sent to steal from was a monster, one of the strongest there is. Graves turns out to be a Warlock, a monster that wields magic. Not many know of the existence of magic, especially not the humans who have been taught, “Monsters not magic.”

It turns out that Kierce has the ability to get through wards; and ability that Graves wants to use. He “hires” her, not that she has much of a choice, no steal an object for him. Part of the deal, she must live in his house, learn from him, and protect her friends by not seeing them. She agrees to his terms after she, Ethan, and Gen are attacked by a group of Druids.

Keirce ans Graves’ relationship starts out tense, each unwilling to trust each other, but knowing that there is something there. As they get to know each other, the walls start to break and they let each other see the parts that they hide from those around them. Parts that no one has ever seen before.

I’ll leave the synopsis there, I don’t want to tell the whole story, but I have a love hate relationship with this book. Of course this is part of a series, that just so happens not to be finished. This is the first book. And OMG I am so upset about that! The scenes with Keirce and Graves are so well written you can feel the attraction between the two. This is a spicy book so of course there are some hot and heavy scenes, but it’s was so good.

SUPER DUPPER SPOILERS AHEAD OF THE END OF THE BOOK!

When Keirce had to leave to help Ethan and the wolves who had been poisoned by something, my heart broke when Graves thought that Keirce was never going to return. And their reunion after was so cute.

But the end. OH THE END. I can’t believe that she left!!! She left!! I know that Graves didn’t tell her everything about her and had to during a stressful time, but she loved him. And he loved her. And she LEFT!!

But based on the end of the book Graves is going to need her help again in the future (the next book I hope).

I just wanted them to be together. To talk about what happened, why he didn’t tell her. For her to have stayed when he asked her to. For him to go with her. Something! But no. We have to wait for the next book to come out to find out if she and Graves get back together.

END SPOILERS

Anyway, The Wren in the Holly Library was an exceptionally well written book. It had its ups and downs, tense moments, surprise twists, and a beautiful (but fristerating) love story. My legs kicked like a school girls at the relationship, I gasped at the twists and turns, and waited with baited breath at the end of the book. I cannot wait for the next book to be released, even if it is slated for June 2025.

I give this book an 8/10 (only cause the cliffhanger kills me)

And a 6/10 on the spicy meter
